The textile and garment industry is the largest manufacturing industry in Thailand, with a total of 5000 factories and 1 million employees, accounting for nearly 20% of the total manufacturing employment and 17% of the total GDP. The annual export volume of textile and clothing reached more than 7 billion US dollars, making it the second largest export industry in Thailand. Among them, clothing exports accounted for 55%, Thailand ranked 13th in the world's clothing export countries, accounting for 2% of the global market share, and textile exports ranked 14th in the world. The United States is the largest buyer of Thailand's textile and clothing, accounting for 1/3 of Thailand's total exports, and clothing accounts for more than half, followed by the European Union, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and the Middle East.
Thailand's textile industry covers all links of the entire industrial chain from fiber to garment production. Although Thailand is not rich in textile raw materials, it produces many chemical fibers and forms a complete set of industries, including fiber, spinning, weaving, knitting, bleaching, dyeing, printing and finishing, as well as garment production and household textiles. There are 18 man-made fiber processing plants (15500 employees), 154 spinning plants (61750 employees), 673 weaving plants (57880 employees), 675 knitting plants (60280 employees) and 414 printing and dyeing plants (47200 employees) in the country. Another 150 sets of printing and dyeing equipment are concentrated in spinning, weaving and knitting enterprises. In addition, there are 2658 garment enterprises with 841520 employees, excluding those small factories with only 20 sewing machines. In sewing factories, about 10% of enterprises are large enterprises (with more than 1000 employees), 40% are medium-sized enterprises (with between 200 and 1000 employees), and the remaining 50% have less than 200 employees.
Thailand's clothing and textile industry shows a steady growth trend. The Thai market has invested more energy in developing products with high added value, especially environmental protection products. The above products account for about 10% of Thailand's textile and clothing exports. In 2010, Thailand's clothing and textile exports reached 3.21 billion US dollars, an increase of 8.27% over the same period last year. From the perspective of the categories of export products, the export value of clothing ranked first, up to 88 million US dollars; Non-woven fabrics and yarns followed closely, with an export value of 78.9 million US dollars; Synthetic fiber and man-made staple fiber ranked third, with a total export value of 23.6 million US dollars; In addition, the export value of household textiles reached 11.6 million US dollars, while the export value of embroidery and mesh fabrics was 4.6 million US dollars each. The United States has always been the largest export market of Thai clothing. In 2010, Thailand's clothing exports to the United States reached 1.26 billion US dollars, an increase of 7.26% over the same period last year. The European Union (with exports of US $1 billion) and Japan (with exports of US $253 million) ranked second and third respectively. Compared with the same period last year, Thailand's clothing exports to the two regions increased by 4.69% and 11.73% respectively.
According to the report issued by Adsale Publishing Ltd., Thailand's clothing exports to ASEAN amounted to US $118 million, up 34.51% year on year. At the same time, Thailand's clothing and textile market has high technical requirements for printing machinery, and also puts forward requirements for relevant printing and graphic art workshops.
According to the information released by the Ministry of Commerce, the import of printing machinery from Thailand's clothing and textile industry in 2010 was about 895 million US dollars, up 29% from 2009. Thailand mainly imports the above printing machinery from Japan, followed by China, Singapore, Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia, Ireland, the United States and Taiwan, China. At present, the labor gap in Thailand's clothing and textile industry is 30000, which will reach 100000 in the future. According to the data released by Fibre2Fashion News Desk (India), of 700000 employees in the clothing and textile industry, only nearly 450000 are officially employed by clothing enterprises. This also means that the industry needs more workers who can work in local clothing and textile manufacturing enterprises for a long time.
The GFT of Thailand Bangkok Textile Industry Exhibition is held by Reed Exhibitions. The exhibition is held once a year. It is also a very important platform for enterprises to open the Thai market. The last GFT of Thailand Bangkok Textile Industry Exhibition attracted 6000 exhibitors, and the number of visitors reached 50000. The exhibition was held in Bangkok International Trade&Exhibition Centre, with an exhibition area of 80000 square meters.
