Market introduction:
Geographic location and advantages: Egypt is located in the northeast of the African continent, facing Europe across the Mediterranean in the north, and connecting the hinterland of the African continent in the southwest. The Suez Canal is also an important channel connecting the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, and connecting the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. Egypt has a convenient transportation network connected with European, Asian and African countries by sea and air and with African countries by land. Egypt has a population of about 82.5 million, with a total population of nearly 600 million radiating the Middle East, North Africa and other surrounding areas. The location is superior and the radiation function is strong.
Economic status: Egypt, as a member of the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA), is one of the most economically and industrially developed countries in Africa. Egypt's economy is an open market economy and is increasingly diversified. In 2009, Egypt's GDP reached 155 billion US dollars, up 5.18% year on year; The total import and export volume reached US $83.809 billion, an increase of 19% over the previous year. Overall, Egypt's economic development trend is very good
Market environment: Egypt has the second largest market size in Africa after South Africa, and has a demand for high, medium and low grade textiles. The average consumption of Egyptian men's clothing is $550 per year, while that of women is more than $900, which is in contrast to Egypt's limited production capacity. Since there are less than 1000 local factories, Egypt needs to import a large number of yarns and finished fabrics from Türkiye and other countries, which holds huge business opportunities for Chinese enterprises in terms of trade and investment.
Good trade relations with China: Egypt is the first African country to establish diplomatic relations with China. The economic and trade cooperation between China and Egypt has maintained a rapid and healthy development momentum in recent years. Affected by the international financial crisis, the bilateral trade volume between China and Egypt was 5.86 billion US dollars in 2009, down 7% year on year. However, compared with other countries in the region, the situation is better. In addition, Egypt's exports to China reached US $750 million in 2009, up 75.4% year on year, maintaining the momentum of rapid development. Even in the face of the impact of the international financial crisis, it has made remarkable achievements and become a major highlight of China-Africa cooperation.
The current situation of the domestic industry: Egypt's textile and clothing industry is an important industrial sector in Egypt, accounting for 30% of the national industrial output and 25% of the national export volume. The import tax of asset equipment is very low, especially the import of clothing machinery, textile machinery, spare parts, chemicals and dyes is duty-free. Under the free trade agreement signed with the EU, Egypt's export of textiles and clothing to EU countries is duty-free. The condition is that the products exported from Egypt to Europe are duty-free from the spinning link, and the products exported from Europe to Egypt are duty-free from the fabric printing link. The production yarn of duty-free textiles and clothing exported from Egypt can be the yarn fabric originating from Egypt, or from other countries within the EU or Euro-Mediterranean agreement. At the same time, the competitiveness of Egypt's textile and clothing exports is only due to the short delivery time for exports to these countries.
Egypt has signed free trade agreements with Europe, the United States, Türkiye and other Arab countries. Under the preferential terms of these agreements, Egypt is more active in producing clothing and textiles for export to EU countries and the United States. However, Egypt has not done as well as expected. Although Egypt has some famous yarns, fabrics and accessories, it still lacks more other varieties, which are not cost-effective to produce in Egypt. Therefore, 70% of Egypt's yarn fabrics and 80% of its accessories must be imported, while China is their target country for increasing import trade and developing closer trade relations.
Preferential policies: Egypt's import and export trade is mainly import, and it depends on the international market. In order to promote the development of foreign trade, Egypt has taken a series of measures to further liberalize trade, reduce tariffs, reduce operating costs, enhance the transparency of foreign trade management, take incentives, improve port services, customs procedures, quality control and product standards. In addition, import tariffs will be significantly reduced to reduce the production costs of domestic enterprises and support the development of national industries. These have provided a good market environment for foreign enterprises to enter the Egyptian and Middle East markets.
